I have to admit, many people seem to be asking the question of how to start an online business, and hey, why wouldn’t they. With the way that the world is today with all the big economic challenges going on, why wouldn’t people want to know how to start an online business and make some extra cash.
Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to get into here and throughout this entire site. So let’s begin…
How To Start An Online Business – The Core Of It
I recognize and know that the concept of starting an online business, or any business for that matter, can be something that’s very daunting for a lot of people. Seriously, business is a very big and broad subject.
But when you really get down to the core of online business, there’s a few things that’s a definite must if you want to have a hope at success.
1) A Website
I know that this seems a bit obvious when talking about how to start an online business but it’s really something that’s worth talking. See about 99% of the people out there that have started a little online business really don’t get the whole website thing.
They feel that all they need to do when starting an online business is throw up some website and poof, they’ll start making money like it’s going out of style.
Now I’m not saying that this couldn’t happen but it’s really not likely. It’s more likely that if you just throw up some old site that isn’t planed right, the site will do nothing. (Believe me on this, I’ve done it a few times)
You need to have a site that is tailored and designed to reach the people that you want to reach and market to them how they would want to be marketed to.
Let me give you an example of this. If you’re marketing plan (more on this in a minute) is based upon ad’s, you might not want to have a site that is very generic. You’ll get a much better response if your site is totally and completely focused around that specific ad.
Things like this are very important to think about when you go to put your site together. This is just a little chip off of the whole iceberg of knowing how to start an online business.
2) A Marketing Plan
Marketing is huge when is comes to knowing how to start an online business. See the internet is really nothing more that a giant location for people to get information and to connect with each other.
Now if you know how to market effectively and really get your business in front of the people that are looking for what you’re offering, you’ll do very well.
But there’s more to it than just that. In the world of online marketing there are literally dozens of different methods that someone can use to market their products or services with. From social media to paid ad’s (PPC) to search engines (SEO) to media buys, you can pick any one of these methods, master it, and become very successful.
And that’s what I’m getting at here. As part of learning how to start an online business you really should pick one method to market your business with and really stick to this method until you’ve mastered it. I know from first hand experience that if you try to do several marketing methods right away and not really master one, you’re going to be kicking yourself down the road.
So pick a marketing style that you feel will be right for you and for your business and really stick to it. That’s what I did and that’s how I have been able to create the success that I’ve had.
3) A Product Or Service
This too is really obvious but it’s it’s something that I get asked about all the time. And there’s a real key point that I feel I need to make around having a product or service to sell online.
A business is really all about helping or contributing to other people so your business’s product or service needs to be something that adds to your potential customers life.
Think about it for a minute here. Starting an online business has to do with trading something (the product or service) for some money. This means that there’s another person involved, the person that’s giving up their money for what you’re offering. If your online business’s product or service doesn’t add value to that potential buyer then you wont make a sale and your online business has already failed.
So just like the other two points that we’ve talked about, when figuring out how to start an online business, you need to figure out what your business is going to trade for the cash. Is it a service that helps people or some product that will make their life easier. If you’re not sure what it is, figure it out and then get cracking with it. That’s truly the only way so know how to start an online business (the action part).
4) A Mentor Or Coach
The last thing that I feel we need to talk about here around knowing how to start an online business has to do with you learning the skills of the trade. There are some very key skills that you will need to learn how to do if you want to have success with starting an online business.
You might want to learn from me or you might not, either way is fine to me BUT FIND SOMEONE.
What normally ends up happening when someone starts to learn how to start an online business but then never finds someone that they can model off of and learn from is that they waste a whole bunch of their time and money and never really get anywhere.
This is not what I want to see. So find someone that you feel you can really connect with and learn about how to start an online business. Then do exactly what they do; really learn from them. Find out what they’re doing and see how you can do it too.
In Closing On How To Start An Online Business
What we’ve just gone over is really just the beginning to answering the question of how to start an online business. It’s really such a big topic that I couldn’t possible go through everything on just this one page. That’s what this whole site is for.

A great overview posting. I think many people expect they can just launch a website and than expect traffic to arrive on mass. Never underestimate the cost of driving traffic there – especially for a brand new site. Its going to be either expensive, or time consuming
Have a lovely day

You nailed this one right on the head. A clear path for people looking to start a business online. I think with things becoming more and more digital, that an online business is a smart move to make! I would add in the website section to make sure to do keyword research so you know what people are looking for before you register a new domain name. Nice reminder on the marketing plan too!… reminding me that I need to update mine

@Mizan, Totally agree with you. If you don’t get people to your site, or the front door of any business, chances are you’re going to fail. No people, no business, and it’s the marketing that brings the people.

Well said Steven!
I think the most important point is to have a “Mentor Or Coach”. Reading experts blogs is different thing but knowing some expert personally can really make a big difference. They can guide you better as they already know the pros and cons.

I totally agree with you. Every time that I’ve had a mentor or a coach, someone that has already walked the path before me, it’s made a world of difference. It’s like someone showed me the door to a fence as oppose to me trying to climb over it. It just makes sense.
