I have to admit, knowing how to start an online business is something that I seem to see a lot of people asking. And hey, why wouldn’t they. With the way that the world is today with some very big economic challenges going on, why wouldn’t people want to know how to start an online business.
Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to get into here and throughout this entire site. So let’s begin…
How To Start An Online Business – The Core Of It
I recognize and know that to concept of starting an online business, or any business for that matter, can be something that is very daunting for a lot of people. Like seriously, business is a very big and broad subject.
But when you really get down to the core of online business, there are a few things that is a must if you want to even have a hope at success.
1) A Website
I know that this seems a bit obvious when talking about how to start an online business but it’s really something that’s worth talking about because 99% of the people out there doing anything on the internet really don’t get the whole website thing.
They feel that all they need to do when starting an online business is through up some website and poof, they’ll start making money.
Now I’m not saying that this couldn’t happen but it’s really not that likely. It’s more likely that if you just though up some old site that isn’t planed right, the site will do nothing. (Believe me on this, I’ve done it a few times)
You need to have a site that is tailored and designed to reach the people that you’re wanting to reach and market to them how they would want to be marketed to.
An example of this is if you’re marketing plan (more on this in a minute) is based upon ad’s, you might not want to have a site that is very generic. You’ll get a much better response if your site is totally focused around the specific ad.
Things like this are very important to think about when you go to get your site together. This is just a little chip off of the whole iceberg of knowing how to start an online business.
2) A Marketing Plan
Marketing is huge when is comes to knowing how to start an online business. See the internet is really nothing more that a giant location for people to learn things and to connect with each other.
Now if you know how to do effective marketing and really get your business in the locations where people are, you will do very well.
But there’s more to it than just that. in the world of online marketing there are literally dozens of different methods that someone can market their product or service. From social media to paid ad’s (PPC) to search engines (SEO) to media buys you can pick any one of these methods and become very successful.
And that’s what I’m getting at here. As part of learning how to start an online business you really should pick a method of marketing and really stick to it. I know for myself that if you try to do everything all at once, you’ll end up getting now where.
So pick a marketing style that you feel will be right for you and for your business and really stick to it. That’s what I did and that’s how I have been able to create the success that I’ve had.
3) A Product Or Service
This one is really obvious but it’s kind of the corner stone for any business, having a product or service to sell to people. And there’s a real key point that I feel I need to make around what I just said.
A business is really all about helping or contributing to other people so your businesses product or service needs to be something that can add to other people.
Think about it for a minute here. Starting an online business has to do with trading something (the product or service) for some money. If you don’t have people, your business can’t generate an income and you’ve already lost.
So just like the other two points that we’ve talked about, when figuring out how to start an online business, you need to figure out what your business is going to trade for the cash. Is it a service that helps people or some product that will make their life easier. No matter what it is, figure it out and then act on it. That is truly the only why so know how to start an online business (the action part).
4) A Mentor Or Coach
The last thing that I feel we need to talk about here around knowing how to start an online business has to do with you learning the skills of the trade. There are some very key skills that you will need to learn how to do if you want to be success with starting an online business.
Now you might want to learn from me or you might not, either way is fine to me BUT FIND SOMEONE.
What normally ends up happening when someone start to learn how to start an online business but doesn’t find someone that they can model off of and learn from is they waist a whole bunch of their time and money and never really get anywhere.
This is not what I want to see. So find someone that you feel you can really connect with and learn from and then do exactly that, learn from them. Find out what they are doing and see how you can do it too.

A great overview posting. I think many people expect they can just launch a website and than expect traffic to arrive on mass. Never underestimate the cost of driving traffic there – especially for a brand new site. Its going to be either expensive, or time consuming
Have a lovely day

You nailed this one right on the head. A clear path for people looking to start a business online. I think with things becoming more and more digital, that an online business is a smart move to make! I would add in the website section to make sure to do keyword research so you know what people are looking for before you register a new domain name. Nice reminder on the marketing plan too!… reminding me that I need to update mine

@Mizan, Totally agree with you. If you don’t get people to your site, or the front door of any business, chances are you’re going to fail. No people, no business, and it’s the marketing that brings the people.

Well said Steven!
I think the most important point is to have a “Mentor Or Coach”. Reading experts blogs is different thing but knowing some expert personally can really make a big difference. They can guide you better as they already know the pros and cons.

I totally agree with you. Every time that I’ve had a mentor or a coach, someone that has already walked the path before me, it’s made a world of difference. It’s like someone showed me the door to a fence as oppose to me trying to climb over it. It just makes sense.
